Robust labour market is braced against the crisis signals

For many years, the record had deep, the other is hunted – in the meantime, the Federal Agency for work ‘ on rising unemployment figures. A trend reversal is not in sight.

The lower economic growth in Germany hits in the labour market, especially the helper-occupations and low-skilled immigrants. In this area the unemployment in July had increased more than for the time of year common, the Federal employment Agency (BA) on Wednesday. “At this point, the economy touches on the labour market”, said BA-Board of management Daniel third Bach in Nürnberg.

In July, the unemployment rate rose to BA-as in this month is common, especially holiday-related. Many companies wait with new hires, the end of the summer holidays. In the case of the authority 2,275 million people were registered as unemployed. This was around 59,000 more than in June, but 49.000 less than a year ago. The unemployment rate increased by 0.1 percentage points to 5.0 percent.

To the current Situation, the DW spoke with Enzo Weber of the Institute for labour market and occupational research.

DW: Professor Weber, in July, the Federal Agency reported for work, around 59,000 more unemployed than in June. This is just the summer doldrums or we are experiencing a turning point in higher unemployment?

Enzo Weber: We have the vacation time and since it is quite normal that the unemployment figures are something to go upstairs. Therefore, there is a seasonal adjustment that takes those effects out. And if we look at adjusted the development season, we have this month the same number of unemployed as in the last month.

Nevertheless, we have to say but: We are in the midst of an economic downturn, which stems from the world economy, and concerns in Germany with its strong export-oriented manufacturing sector. And also the time of work, which always responds very quickly to the economy. Accordingly, the labour market is now worse than we were accustomed in recent years.

Large corporations such as VW, BASF, Bayer, and Thyssenkrupp have announced massive job cuts, or by dragging them already. How does this affect the overall picture of the labour market?

In the last time, the messages of celebrities have heaped, in fact, large corporations over job cuts. If you look at the labour market as a whole, then you have to say clearly: This is not representative. The dismissal rate is now as low as it was since the reunification, and this has a reason: namely, that the labour force are now a lot scarcer than in the past. And if workers are scarce, then I secure the. This is not to say, I attack, then quickly to layoffs, because I know, a new adjustment in the boom can take a very long time, which is difficult, maybe you won’t work at all.

In which developments on the labour market were ringing the alarm bells?

We are now safe in a Situation where we have to say: The economic downturn is already substantial and the concerns meanwhile in Germany, many farms. But we see also that the labour market is considerably more robust than has previously been the case. That is, we should now be doing everything you can to support the robustness of the labour market; short-time work, for example, is a proven remedy to support just-exporting firms during a downturn, so that you can keep your people also really. We have rehearsed in the last recession is already sufficient. Therefore, I see good conditions, that we will come through this slump again. But you surely must remain vigilant.
