Migration: Europe is not the main goal

In Berlin, researchers presented a study of global migration movements. The experts explain the causes of Migration and clean up with a few clichés.

Adrian Heiermann have to laugh a little. No, to the “long weekend” wouldn’t go there now. Even if the study “Europe as a destination? The future of global Migration”, “very much work” would have been, as the studied political scientist and a sociologist, in an interview with Deutsche Welle (DW) said. Heiermann has been working since the end of 2017 as a researcher at the Berlin Institute for population and development. The Institute, which was founded in the year 2000 as a charitable Foundation, an independent think tank that deals with issues of regional and global demographic changes.

On Wednesday in Berlin, published exactly fits in the core activities of the Institute. The authors Adrian Heiermann, Jana Aresin, Alisa capes and Reiner Kling wood devote nearly 90 pages the big questions in the Field of Migration: “Why Migration?”, “What regional differences are there?” or “when escape is inevitable?”.

Reasons for Migration

Although there had been Migration has always been, says Heiermann, earlier people were migrated, however, primarily, “in order to develop new areas”. Today, there is migration of different reasons: “on the one Hand we have the so-called humanitarian hikes. This means that these people from persecution, Wars or the like to escape, on the other hand, we have the Migration that takes place for educational purposes or as a family reunion. Increasingly, there are also mixed forms, in which it is not clear which field they need to be assigned.” In addition, says Heiermann, that people are basically “mobile”: “Due to globalization, more and more people are Hiking at all in the situation.”

Result of the study: It is not the poor in certain regions, to migrate abroad

Economic factors also play a role. The authors speak in this connection, the “benefit gap” between the industrial Nations and the less developed regions of the world, an enormous stand. In the latter it is often lacking in workplaces, in order to provide young people with employment. The result is for the experts is clear: especially in the group of 20 – to 39-Year-old the desire for Migration would be promoted by it””.

The Figures, the present, the researchers, are impressive. Alone in the year 2017 258 million people were considered international migrants. This means that they lived outside of the country in which you were born. This number could rise in the coming years. From surveys of the market and opinion research Institute Gallup, based in Washington, D. C, shows that worldwide, approximately 750 million people can imagine, to move to another country, there should be the opportunity to do so. This is 15 percent of the adult population.

USA dream destination for migrants

According to the Gallup study, the migration request, with 33 per cent in the countries South of the Sahara is at its highest. In Latin America and the Caribbean, where the desire has increased since the year of 2010 at the strongest, there are at least 27 percent in the Middle East and North Africa, 24 percent. In the various regions of Asia, in contrast, is only seven to eight percent.

Adrian Heiermann makes it clear that the European Union, the “dream was not the target” of most of the migrants. Maybe, says the expert, may have been in the past few years, the self-perception in time “in some Parts of Europe, but if you look at, for example, the extent of migration flows from Latin America to the US, you will quickly see that the migration flows have a different volume than to Europe”.

The United States as a point of reference for Migration: This Trend is also true worldwide. According to the Gallup Institute, about one in five, 21 per cent of potential migrants worldwide, the United States as a destination. That’s the equivalent of around 158 million people. Germany, France and the United Kingdom would be 42, 36, respectively, 34 million people attractive.

The EU needs Migration

The European Union behind the United States falls back, is according to the authors, the migration policy of the EU. Since the EU “numbers, at the latest,” since the high Commissioner for Refugees in the year 2015, the aim “(irregular) Migration as much as possible limit”, is “the number of protection seekers decreased significantly”. The majority of the population, this policy will be welcomed.

According to a study by the EU Commission from the year 2018, 53 percent of EU citizens the immigration are from Non-EU countries “skeptical-to-negative”. A fatal misjudgement of one’s own Situation, as Heiermann and his colleagues explain. Because the EU, the sober analysis of need alone “due to the projected significant Ageing of the societies” simply more immigration. Almost across the Board, more and more EU would go to citizens in retirement. The result is that In the future there will be less contributors to the statutory pension funds, while at the same time, more and more people are on which services rely. The cost for the health and care systems would immensely increase.

The issues of Migration and asylum are the defining issues of the European Union

In spite of this grey future image Heiermann and his colleagues do not want to dismiss the reader of your study quite hopeless. With the global migration Pact, the UN General Assembly in December 2018, with an absolute majority has assumed, existing, for example, for the first time, a framework for Cooperation on migration policy-global to vote.

Also in Germany there was the first tentative sign that “something is moving”. In March 2019, adopted in skilled workers immigration law, the Federal government had taken a prudent step to regular immigration to expand trails, especially for professionals.
