In India, the spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria is rising sharply. The Sebastian’s, correspondent in the ARD radio studios in New reports Delhi undindische media on 5. June, 2019.

A study by the Indian health authorities have revealed that two-thirds of the test persons bacteria may not have shown in the body, which respond to treatment by antibiotics.

In Germany, the number is according to the studies approximately ten percent of the population. In Europe, there will be annually about 33,000 deaths due to antibiotic resistance.

Heavy use in the fattening of animals

However, the proportion of people working in agriculture – in particular animal – much higher, about 21 percent.

In India, too, is the increasing meat consumption likely contributes to growing antibiotic resistance.

Large parts of the Indian population are because of their faith, actually vegetarians. With increasing prosperity, the appetite for meat is increasing, however.

Over-the-counter, without a doctor’s instructions

In India, the rapid spread of resistant germs, however, also has other reasons.

The authors of the study see a second important reason for this is that antibiotics are also used for people inappropriately and much too frequently.

The authorities fear that many diseases could take a much more dangerous course, if you can no longer be treated with an antibiotic.

India is considered to be one of the largest markets for antibiotics in the world. The health system is expanded, bad. Drugs are often taken without medical advice. In addition, there are antibiotics without a prescription.

In Germany, however, antibiotics are prescription-only. Doctors make sure that patients are taking these over a longer period of time, in order to prevent that the drugs be discontinued in the case of a relief from the symptoms early, and bacteria then have the opportunity to develop resistance.

Many people in India use antibiotics to combat minor illnesses such as colds with them. Against most viral infections, antibiotics will not help at all.

This Situation leads, in the opinion of the researchers that India has become a focal point for resistance to antibiotics.
