Made in Germany: the German Comic author Mawil signed tribute to Lucky Luke

For more than 70 years, Lucky Luke rides through the Wild West. Never he was drawn by a German. As you take in such legendary cowboy boots, told a draughtsman Mawil in the DW-Interview.

Deutsche Welle: In “Lucky Luke saddles” have the Western hero for the first time from the horse to the Bicycle saddle require. An unusual fellow, for a Cowboy.

Mawil: I’m a big Fan of bike. In my stories something is always what makes me fun. I’m in Berlin every day, about an hour bike, with my diamond-DDR-wheel, a bike tour through the Baltic States and a mountain bike Tour through the mountains of Georgia and Azerbaijan behind me. My Lucky Luke-a tribute, so to speak, a Declaration of love to this means of transport. I think the world would be a better place if more people would ride a bike more.

Together with Lucky Luke, the Comic reader learns in a fast-paced journey across the Wild West as the modern bike took the place of the former high wheels. Here, you will face the former US-American Bicycle manufacturer Pope and Overman each other as tough competitors. A true story?

So as I would be, certainly. I have researched the history of modern bicycles and am on several manufacturers in the United States encountered.

Pope was historically the largest and Overman one of the first who had a license for the manufacture of wheels. The Rest – the hunt for the prototype through the Wild West, the involuntary Stop on the Indian-totem pole, the Bicycle race in San Francisco – thought of.

So it was also Lucky Lukes inventor Morris. He used historical persons, such as, for example, the Dalton’s (Bank robbers and horse thieves in the Wild West, note d. Red.)and developed his own characters.

In Lucky Luke are not only fighting with crooks and Indians…

I have housed some of the bike-annoyances of the modern age. For example, the frequent Problem is that you are not allowed to take his bike on the train. The railway company is not in my history. But I am a Fan of the Institution, Deutsche Bahn and the conductor; my tribute is more of the head devoted to that thinks only of Profit.

More than 70 years ago, Morris created the lone Cowboy who shoots faster than his shadow. Certainly not an easy task to slip into these Cowboy boots?

At the beginning I had a huge respect, not only in front of the heritage, but also because it was the first Time I drew a figure, which is my own invention. But then I just started – I had to be eventually done.

My Comic is an homage, the homage, before two French draughtsman had drawn each one. That is to say, I didn’t have to hold me like the previous follow-up signatories, exactly where each ear and each Hand looks the same as the Original.

Around a year they sat on the more than 600 individual images. How did you lose the Overview?

The Hardest part for me was the first to have the idea. Then, as the story with the bike, I had to me actually, the only funny stuff all around the bike think of to propel this to the top and in the Wild West transform. First of all, I am committed to the Storyboard. For this, I wrote all the Gags that came to my mind and brought them into a dramaturgy.

Then, I drew all the pages, as they should later in the book, appearance, coarse. For outsiders to understand, because you only see stick figure in any box. In this mark phase, it happens very often that I change something, the box cut it out and on the next page adhesive. It is only when, for me, the rhythm of the Storyboard approved, I’ll get to the drawings.

Pure Hand Work?

Yes, all my drawings are by Hand and preferably with a pencil. Actually, most of the pencil for the sketch and draw the final line with a Fine-Liner. For me, the final line is from the pencil, because I like this vibrant, scratchy line. And then I scan all the frames and add the colors on the computer.

A tribute to one of the most famous Comic book heroes you can’t apply certainly. How did you come to this honor?

I trust the never – the publisher came up to me. The have of course switched to no display, but under four eyes asked whether I could imagine. You already knew of my previous books and have me trust the apparently.

An accolade for a Comic book writer?

Yes, of course. Even as a child I was a Comic Fan. I grew up in the East, because there were not so many, and I have swallowed up everything thing that came into my hands. Some of the Comics I have traced, among other things, also Lucky Luke. At the time, I would never have imagined that I would self-publish as an official book.

Lucky Luke changed course. Tribute 3 – by Mawil. Egmont Comic Collection is since 2. May 2019 on the book market.
