Dirk Nowitzki: “Here the circle closes”

DW: Dirk Nowitzki, after 20 years, two months and five days, your NBA career is finally over. What goes on in you when you hear it?

Dirk Nowitzki: Oh, that’s good. But since some of the emotional moments were. Before the game, the Video was incredible (San Antonio had played a Clip with Nowitzkis career-high points on the scoreboard, and Nowitzki moved to tears, note. d. Red.) and shortly after the game, when really it was all over. I’ve tried, and my feelings together. But here and there, it was hard.

They were adopted with a standing ovation from the hall. It was a career-end, as you have requested it?

Without the Playoffs, that was as good as it gets. I would, of course, stopped at home. I think, on Tuesday (during the last game against Phoenix with the announcement that he ended his career, Anm. d. Red.) it would have been optimal. But what happened here was unbelievable. That something like this can happen in an away game. It had sounded almost like a home game. When I got free shot throws, were the “MVP”Shouts real loud. So it was a super, super experience. And I take it with me, of course.

Socks and underwear thrown away

Here in San Antonio is a small circle. Because here you had taken care of the 1998 game of a world XI against a same-age U.S. Team for the first time in America, a lot of attention was the surprising 104:99 win with 33 points, the best launcher. And now you have to let her career end.

Yes, at that time, my career in San Antonio has really started. Before that, I was the only player at DJK Würzburg, and this has catapulted a game really got me into the world. This was madness, what was going on then. Since I have been directly drafted from the second German League, in the NBA. It fits together somehow, that the circle closes here now. I also have had always great experiences, great games and great Playoff series against the Spurs.

As you have perceived it to be for the last Time in the cabin, and with your team-mates?

It was weird. Before the game I said that I the Jersey überstreife me again – that was an emotional Moment. And then the Jersey after the game for the last Time to take off. I’ve thrown it all away, socks, underpants, everything. We do not need to wash, we throw away everything. It is clear that I will miss it for months, probably for a few years or forever – I don’t know. But, I gave it my all.

Youtube-Highlights for children

Their children are two, four and five years old. Have noticed actually, that it is for the dad’s special day?

I haven’t seen you after the game in Dallas (the Mavericks flew immediately to San Antonio, Anm. d. Red.), but they were all in the hall and up to the end. To check really that I will stop now, you are, I think, still a bit too young. But luckily there is Youtube. I’ll YouTube the Highlights in press to go, if you are a bit older. Then I’ll show them that the dad could play a little bit better than what you have seen now at the end here.
