The President of Ecuador Lenín Moreno wants to lead his country back into the Western community of States

It belongs to the peculiarities of the relationship between Julian Assange and Ecuador: While the international interest in the fate of the Wikileaks founder is consistently high, to accompany many people, of all places, in the South American country, whose Embassy he lived almost seven years, and his capture with a shrug. Assange, a symbol of worldwide struggle for the freedom of the press, is in Ecuador, at best, a side note. The majority of the 17 million inhabitants Assange is hardly a term that some know him at all. And that, as in Europe or the United States for Assange to be demonstrated, in Ecuador almost unthinkable.

And it wanted a peculiarity in the relationship between Assange and Ecuador: Both the current President Lenín Moreno, as well as his predecessor, Rafael Correa, and want to score points with the person Julian Assange, the internationally – albeit in a completely opposite direction.

Correa uses in 2012, the favor of the hour

As at 19. June 2012, Julian Assange asks in the Embassy of Ecuador in London seeking political asylum, Rafael Correa as a gift from the heavens. The left-wing populists and activists combines a deep aversion to the USA. The Australian has made his revelations, the policy of the United States in Afghanistan and in Iraq is just, Correas Ecuador is forming with Cuba, Venezuela and Bolivia, an anti-American axis in Latin America. The brothers Castro are known around the world, Venezuela’s charismatic President Hugo Chávez, as well, now you have the unique opportunity to back to the asylum for Assange into the international spotlight for Correa.

“The biggest traitor in the history of Latin America” – Ex-President Rafael Correa about his successor Moreno

Ecuador’s President sold all of this as his contribution to the fight for international freedom of the press – which is all the more surprising, because Correa is going on in his homeland with the utmost severity against unwelcome journalists: with processes of plating and the opposition of the transmitter. Correas message, a year and a half before the presidential elections in Ecuador: here, I keep my protective Hand over Julian Assange and fighting even against the all-powerful United States for the freedom of the press.

The cost-Benefit calculation to Julian Assange

President Correa is on 17. February 2013, with an overwhelming majority, re-elected, and Assange will remain for the entire third term of office in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. However, the relationship between the two Alpha animals cools noticeably. It was in the beginning, both for Correa, as well as for Assange, a classic Win-Win Situation with a President who rises in the world of politics, and activists, who plays in the protection of the message, kept secret documents to the Public, begins Correa to realize, slowly, that he can lose with the person Julian Assange.

He picks up the diplomatic asylum he stands there, like a turn of the neck, he makes the Australians a further grant, not to hear the questions of the costs and Benefits that are given to him in his home. Can afford a country like Ecuador, where one in four lives in poverty, estimated at a Million dollars a year for Julian Assange, the Wikileaks founder by a security company to guard? Rafael Correa, decides the “Problem” with elegant sit out, and to leave it to his successor, Lenín Moreno.

Moreno says of Correa

For the next peculiarity of the relationship between Julian Assange and Ecuador to the Wikileaks founder can’t. But it is eventually fatal. Lenín Moreno, from 2007 to 2013, a loyal Vice President under Rafael Correa, is in 2017, to be his successor. Moreno is beginning in the case of many Ecuadorians suspected to be only a puppet Correas and the policies of his predecessor, the allegedly pulls the still in the Background, the strings. Moreno is the stereotype to clean up. And it was hard. The entire Interior and foreign policy, for Correa in the ten years of his presidency, puts Moreno in question and on the head.

At the time, still pretty much best friends: Rafael Correa and Lenín Moreno, at the handover ceremony on 24. May 2017 in Quito

Moreno drifts foreign policy to the right, of the Bolivarian Alliance to Cuba and Venezuela, and a pivoted economically a neo-liberal course. Takes in for the highly indebted country even new loans from the International monetary Fund and the world Bank, organisations that had a hell of Rafael Correa. State employees who are suspected to sympathize with Correa, will be fired. Tabula rasa, nothing is more reminiscent of the “citizen Revolution” of the past. The emancipation goes so far, Moreno and Correa are today, spider enemy. And Assange, diplomatic asylum and the freedom of cost.

Assange’s farewell on Rates

Clear signals sending the “new” Ecuador in March 2018, by the Embassy staff, assange’s Communication cuts off access on the grounds that he had interfered in the Affairs of other countries. It calls for new rules of behavior from him, and Assange must now pay for his housing, medical care and Laundry. The warning, a violation of the requirements could lead to the withdrawal of the asylum, makes definitively clear that the Wikileaks founder is only a temporary guest. From there, Moreno is always seem that he wants to get rid of Assange today rather than tomorrow, even with the United States, he should have talked about it.

The withdrawal of diplomatic asylum and the subsequent arrest of assange by British authorities, is the final point with pictures for the whole world. Moreno’s Embassy, in the middle of his presidency: Behold, I have led my country back in the international community of States – and by the way, my favorite enemy Rafael Correa, a maximum of humiliated.
