“Peace is Power”: Yoko-Ono-exhibition in Leipzig

It is considered the most hated woman in the history of music. But Yoko Ono is not only the widow of John Lennon, but also an independent artist. In Leipzig, Works from five decades will be shown.

Over 2000 square meters of exhibition space can play Yoko Ono in the Leipzig Museum of fine arts. From the ground floor up to the second floor in Germany, the largest exhibition of the Japan covers-American artist. Privileged Childhood in Japan

Born Yoko Ono, on 18. February 1933 in Tokyo, in the Imperial estate of their grandparents. The family maintains good relations with the Japanese Royal house. Money plays no role. Yoko – the Name means “child of the sea” – grows up in a Palace-like house with 30 staff. To your parents you little contact. Her father works as a banker in California. Beginnings as a Performance artist

Art as a community experience

1995 Yoko occurs Ono for the first time publicly as an artist in her home country of Japan. In 2008/09, various museums in Germany and the UK show a Retrospective of her Work. In 2009, the art Biennale honors in Venice, the Japanese girl with the Golden lion for her life’s work. 2012 she receives in Vienna Kokoschka-prize. In 2014, there is a major retrospective at the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt.

For her current exhibition in Leipzig, “Yoko Ono. Peace is Power” has invited the Japanese, German artists, to develop an object that is then filled with water. This is part of their performative concept, which makes you their exhibitions also to the “community of art”. The “Water Event” had developed as early as 1971 for an exhibition in Syracuse, new York in the United States.

Yoko Ono has announced the opening of the Leipzig exhibition, the Museum of fine arts. The exhibition is still on until 7. To see July 2019.
