Comment: trump’s speech was a little bit of @RealDonaldTrump

In his state of the Union speech, US President, Trump called for Unity across party lines and to compromise, in order to overcome the division of the country. We should not fall for it, says Michael Knigge.

Donald Trump has kept this manuscript – just like in his first state of the Union speech a year ago, and his first appearance before Congress in 2017. And so the sound of his speech, such as “State of the Union”Speeches now sound and less to the spontaneous thoughts, the Trumps to Talk to.

The Congress, however, has changed since last year: In the Mid-term elections the Democrats have won the majority in the house of representatives, Trumps Republicans dominate the Senate. And Trump had mastered himself, he offended no one, threatened no country with an Intervention and imposed even the national security state of emergency, he could be the construction of the wall on the border to Mexico, even without money from the Congress to enforce. Even in its Slogans “America First” and “Make America Great Again” renounced Trump.

The conclusion of the standstill

Instead, trump’s stock speech, primarily from the appeal, the grave of the parties struggles to overcome, in the sense of national unity. Of course, Trump wouldn’t be Trump, if he had not found between the conciliatory words, nor time, afraid to stir against migrants without papers, the Iran-to strip, and higher military budgets of the greedy NATO partners.

Trump called on the deputies and senators, to overcome the “political standstill”, and to bridge old divides,””, “to heal old wounds” and “a spirit of compromise and cooperation”. It is only together that America could put a stop to the schism, the rending the country. It is only together, as Trump explained to the Congress, the problem should be solved, the millions of Americans activities: access to the health care system or Jobs from which you can live.

And lo and behold, Trump is right. He’s right, that only cooperation and compromise can overcome the political divisions of the country. He is right that in the case of the ailing infrastructure, the care of expensive and hard-to-reach health, the immigration system and to many other fields, only cross-party cooperation helps.

The greatest common divisor

Unfortunately, Trump himself has yet to as a bridge-Builder excelled – on the contrary. He is the last person who is really interested in a fair compromise. If the world has learned in the first half of his term, anything, then, that the “Dealmaker” Trump concepts such as balancing of interests and non-partisan solutions are counter. In fact, he has already contributed more to the division of the country as his immediate predecessor.

Michael Knigge is a DW correspondent in Washington

Shortly before the speech, the “New York Times” reported that Trump has invited some of the television presenters to a private dinner, where he Duke is furious about leading Democrats such as Chuck Schumer, Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren. The fits hardly the much-vaunted Unity.

A momentous example of trump’s unwillingness to compromise, is just a few weeks old: in Order to force the Democrats to approve money for his “big, beautiful wall”, was responsible for the Trump of the longest Budget stalemate in the history of the United States, and in negative consequences for millions of Americans.

Trump wanted to always enforce its will at any price – as a real estate entrepreneur as well as today as President. For him is all about Winning – whatever the cost.

Until the next Tweet

The warm words will not fit in Trumps “State of the Union”. His speechwriter drew wise and trenchant passages, for example, when they let Trump is an ode to the historically large number of women in the newly elected Congress to sing. You could almost let this speech, the sounds of a President worthy of the lulled and was a turning point in his administration, recognize.

The hope dies the latest. But one should not overstate a single speech. After all, what have we learned so far about Trump, seems to be in the “State of the Union”-by Talk only rarely is the true Trump. The real Trump shows up on Twitter and in his daily work. Therefore, his appeal to bipartisan compromise is expected to hold only until the next Tweet.
