He develops a secret Star of the German Handball-Teams, but fail with him tragic: Patrick Wiencek speaks in a DW Interview about the bitter Out of the home world Cup and the future of his sport.
DW: Patrick Wiencek, how painful is it, that the Gold-bursting dream here in Hamburg ahead of time?
Patrick Wiencek: This is of course very disappointing for us. We have done a lot for the game and wanted to go to the finals. But, unfortunately, Norway has played better today than we are.
What has made Norway better?
They were standing in front of the defence very well. We can make no easy goals, and our defense today was not as good as in the Games before. Therefore, we have never had really access to the game. We have fought, have tried everything, but somehow we came today, ran.
Norway was in front of the gate more efficiently. What do you think, what’s missing from your Team in a world Cup finals?
It’s hard to say. We have lost the first game in this world Cup. I don’t know how it is now designed. The French have also lost almost ten gates of the residue (30:38 against Denmark in the second semi-final, note. d. Red.). Clearly, we had more made, but there are such games in which it doesn’t work out and a game we have had today. Now we need to check it, and in the Bronze medal game against France.
You contend for today a little with the referee’s performance?
No. We know that you whistle in this tournament is a peculiar line, but this is so for both sides, and so it was today, not the arbitrators.
The German team has evolved in this tournament. What takes your Team of the German Handball takes?
I think we have sparked a euphoria in Germany and we want to maintain now. We want to just make more, we establish and then we see what results in the future.
In 2007, there was a similar euphoria during the world Championships at home, but then died down. Will be the enthusiasm for Handball, this Time more sustainable?
I’m not a soothsayer, I hope that we take away the wave of Euphoria. Ice hockey is a cool Sport and is part behind the football to number 2 in Germany. We will give the player more of everything, so people stay tuned.
Denmark or Norway – who are now catching up on Gold?
Honestly, that to me is pretty irrelevant. This will account for the two. To me it is only important that we win the 3rd place game.
In the juniors, you have been able to win the championship this season. Do you think that you can do with this team?
I believe that if we continue like this, then we definitely have a chance.
