One night I may sleep in the Bauhaus. Not in the giant hardware store of the same Name, which is found in every major industrial area in Germany, but in the Bauhaus. The address “Gropius Allee 38” sounds like a awe-inspiring Historical significance. The street is named after Walter Gropius, the chief thinkers of the famous school, founded in Weimar in 1919, and, for political reasons, moved to Dessau in 1925. Invited me to be sustained shortly before the celebrations on the occasion of the 100 anniversary of the Foundation of the Bauhaus, as well as the state of Saxony -.

Bauhaus Modern to Dessau

On the historic staircase goes up to the fourth floor

This staircase is Walter Gropius, or the “White God”, as, later, the Americans after his Emigration in the 1930s, probably a hundred times up and down. It is an uplifting feeling, to walk in his paths, and to throw a glance in his office in the “bridge”. The bridge connects two important parts of the Bauhaus building, the workshop building and the former commercial vocational school. The had to bring Gropius also on the Site. Behind the Studio building and the master houses.

Place to sleep with a story

The Studio house, in my bedroom is a place for the night and is now rented to guests from all over the world, opened in 1926. It is a new Era ushered in. Here the idea of the Campus was built, as a place that should unite living and Working under one roof. A Sensation. On the balconies, just large enough to have a chair on it, let countless students and young master scan. These photos embodied for me the promise of Modernity: Young, well-looking men and women, the celebrate in a relaxed mood. The Modern must have been a happy time, full of lightness of Being and the “New people” throwing off the Ballast of the civil tower.

Mood of optimism on a small balcony

The dawning of a new era, these photographs transport from the so-called “preller house” in any case, on most excellent. Even today the epithet, of the landscape painter Friedrich Preller the Older, from the 19th century is remembered. A century back, to the hospitality of the artist. Preller was an art student at the time, in Weimar, living there.

Renovation for the anniversary

My room is on the fourth floor. You mean still, to feel the energy of the pioneers of the past, one of the newly renovated stairs. On each floor there is a large mullioned window that gives views of the surroundings, free and bright light. Currently it looks dark in the stairs. The Windows are covered by the Plan, in which the Wind is choppy. The renovation work on the façade in the context of the 100-year anniversary are not yet complete. It smells of damp color, in my Bedroom, which is reminiscent of a modern Loft: simple, light, Spartan furnishings.

My room at the preller house: simple and functional

No one would expect to find in the Bauhaus’s plush Sofas. Instead: linoleum floor, a Desk made of tubular steel, cantilever chair, ball lamp, shelves, double bed. And a sink. That happened in 1926. For the time the a total of 28 rooms, of which 16 have a private balcony, the pure luxury. A Central hallway connected the working and sleeping rooms, each floor had its own kitchen, a shared toilet and a shower. Even a gymnastics room was located in the basement. To accommodated the times of the GDR the Bauhaus was a scientifically-cultural the centre and four rooms, one per floor was given up to take a shower. Since then, guests stay in the student booths of the Bauhaus, which will now be renovated for the anniversary, once again, true to the original.

Women moved into the basement

It was white, contrary to the idea of the white Modern – not so often used. The floor the student was on the ground floor, the were largely engaged in the weaving, blue. The floors above in red or yellow.

On the 20 square-meter rooms must have felt, but above all, they were affordable: 20 Reichsmark per month, including cleaning and Gas. Probably complained to no residents then, if in the Winter the cold moved by the simple window glazing, and in summer, the sun heated up the rooms properly.

Walter Gropius designed the Bauhaus in Dessau

Functional and practical accommodation

The preller house there is direct access to the canteen, and from there it goes to the workshop building. An icon of the new building, with a flat roof, a glass curtain wall and the famous logo on the Front. Today it houses the administration of the Bauhaus Foundation, a Museum, Bauhaus-Shop and Bauhaus-Club – a mix of dining hall and café spaces – a research library and a small stage. In the North wing of the building, the institution uses ongoing six spaces for Design and architecture seminars.

No Detail is left to chance

The Bauhaus is not a product of chance, it is built on action. Depending on the time of day the sun makes no case that the letters of the lettering BAUHAUS double, depending on the shadow on the facade. The exterior and the interior, every Detail is carefully planned. Even the view from the air was taken into account in the plane to the city of Dessau. When you stroll Past the curtain facades, horizontal bands of Windows, lettering and bridge, it is, as you would go to a sculpture. Every page looks different.

A night in the Bauhaus is not a Spa holiday, a good night’s sleep, it is there nevertheless. A bit simplistic, you should like it. And a desire to bring, to feel the spirit, the spirit of Modernism, was full of lightness and optimism about the Future.
