Restored and re-film history(n):

Netflix and Co almost exclusively on New. The policy seeks, however, to the preservation of the film heritage. We represent the 10 new DVD releases from different countries in film history for the home.

On 1. January 2019 a of the state Minister for Culture Monika Grütters, and experts of various Stripes agreed-million-dollar program to safeguard the film heritage. Every year tens of millions of euros from 2019 in the digitization of German film – and the first ten years. 100 million euros is a nice sum, though many experts say that the still much too little for the Herculean task of film heritage.

The other arts have it easier

What is it about? In essence, it is ultimately a question of how a whole culture division can be prepared for the future. The comparison with other arts, is helpful here.

In order to secure the old (or newer) paintings, art restorers a lot of money in the Hand. They ensure that a painting by Albrecht Dürer or Caspar David Friedrich can be used in many years, yet so shown as to the time of its formation. These paintings hang in the Museum.

Music is preserved by old scores will be collected and maintained – and then to the performance. In the classical country of Germany, Beethoven symphonies or Bach are to be heard concerts every day somewhere in the cultural metropolises, but also in the province. The literature has in this respect not so hard. Books can be printed for relatively little money. The people must make the effort to read. The work of art is created anyway in the head.

What is the Medium of Film in a different way? Two things make the difference: The preservation of a film as well as the opportunity to consider this also. First of all, it is expensive to receive films at all. Analog film reels disintegrate at some point and need to be replaced. This is done in the last few years, with the help of digital techniques. “It is precisely because of the preservation of our film heritage is so time-critical, we can’t risk that yet more years pass,” said state Minister for Culture Monika Grütters.

A lot of effort and high costs

However, the new techniques – in contrast to previous expectations – not a panacea. Digital carrier are exposed to the ravages of time. So you need to always be transferred. In addition, it is very expensive to reconstruct an old movie and restore.

View into a film archive of analog film roles still play an important role

The second Problem is in the playback practice. Previously, you could look at the works of film history in cinema, in television. Later, the VHS tape came today, the old films to appear on DVD or Blu-ray.

This construct is faltering. The cinemas show the latest films from a few local cinemas and dedicated Film-initiatives apart that have written cinema history on the flags. It used to be different. Also, the subsidy to the local cinema scene is, in comparison to the funding of Opera and the theatre, is much lower.

Film history disappears from the linear television

The broadcasting practice of the German television has also changed radically. Even public institutions don’t care about to film history – from niche channels such as Arte and 3 SAT apart.

The Berlin film festival “movie:ReStored” since 2016, the German film heritage

And the currently so popular streaming provider? Netflix, Amazon and Co pumps your money to 99 percent in the production of new film history is (limited) to be found in this area only in some small (mostly European) suppliers. You want to watch a Film by Fritz Lang and Rainer Werner Fassbinder, is not so easy.

Classics on DVD and Blu-ray

The offer on the DVD or the Blu-ray Format remains all the same. That is quite present. However, on the one hand, these media are for the reasons stated, not for eternity. On the other hand, there are still some large gaps, especially if one moves a little away from harms as a film-historical paths – for example, if you dealt with the cinema outside of Hollywood and Europe. Nevertheless, only the DVD for the film history often.

Cinematic delights such as the works of Jacques Becker, are today often seen only on DVD and Blu-ray: “When it is night in Paris” (1954)

Monika Grütters emphasized on the first movie, heritage-Festival in Berlin two years ago, that “movies were the most visible memory of our Nation”: “dramas, comedies or thrillers (sense) expression of a time, a life, a certain order of society,” said the Minister. Not least because working in the home Grütters on a long-term digitization strategy.

Movies discover, not only in the cinema

It is also for this reason, the Deutsche Welle for many years, month-to-month, movies of the cinema history, the shows on DVD and Blu-ray. In doing so, we have, as a channel aimed at an audience especially outside of Germany, not only German film history in mind. There are numerous examples of works by famous Directors, who were not long to see on the big screen – or only in outdated versions on DVD templates.
