1. World war II: the war letters of German soldiers online now

For soldiers on the fronts of the First world war, field-post letters were the only way to keep in touch with their families. The German Digital library is now 700 historical documents online.

Even a hundred years after the end of the 1. World war to capture the horrors and events of these times of war, hard to come by. Now field post letters written by German soldiers, written between 1914 and 1918 to their families, friends and relatives can be viewed online.

Worldwide, hundreds of letters are to be read in order from now on, on the website of the German Digital library, the Museum for communication in Nuremberg on Monday (05.11.2018) to the press. The Museum Foundation Post and telecommunications, these historically valuable documents in cooperation with the national Portal for culture and Knowledge online.

In the war years of 1914 to 1918, around 14 million German soldiers were separated at the Front and over the months and years of their families. Field post letters were often the only connection to the homeland.

Around 30,000 military employees worked at the time, to send the approximately 29 million postal items. 700 of these letters, often in a very personal way, the hopeless Situation at the Front to reflect, are now available online.
