Researchers from all over the world meet in South Korea, the short version of the special report of the intergovernmental panel on climate change to 1.5 degrees-to adopt the target. The big question: Can we stop global warming? And if Yes: how?

Climate scientists advise since Monday, 1. October, in South Korea, such as the States of the global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius limit. At the time of the Paris climate agreement by 2015 was still “relatively unclear what are the risks to be avoided in a 1.5 degree warmer world compared to a world that is two degrees warmer,” said the Chairman of the IPCC, Lee Hoe Sung, at the start of the five-day meeting of the Committee in Incheon.

Scientists have warned for years that climate change is more extreme weather, says Lee. “The heat waves, Wildland fires, and heavy rains of the past few months, everywhere in the world have highlighted the importance of these warnings.”

Tedious Way

Agreed, most of the researchers are that the world is heading, without additional efforts to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions to three to four degrees warming compared to pre-industrial time. The politicians had decided in the agreement of Paris to limit warming to well below two degrees. In addition, efforts should be made to stop at 1.5 degrees. The latter had asked for, especially the small island States to sea-level rises less strongly, and the livelihood of its inhabitants could be obtained.

The final special report follows

The IPCC was given the task to describe in a special report, what would be the consequences of a warming of 1.5 degrees, and how the warming stopped there. Already in January, the intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC), wrote in a draft that the 1.5-degree goal “with 66 percent probability, beyond the Reach”.

The final report will be after the IPCC meeting in lcheon on 8. Published on October. Crucial, especially the summary of the Reports for political decision-makers.

Groundwork for the UN climate change conference

In total a core team of 91 authors and 250 other researchers for the special report 6000 publications had analysed around 24,000 experts. The Report will also be a basis for the next UN climate summit in December in the Polish Katowice (German Kattowitz). “For Katowice, the report is once again an important impulse giver”, was called it from delegation circles in Incheon.
