The competition “100 Best posters of the year-Germany Austria Switzerland” took place in this year to 16. Time instead. His goal is to show a current picture of the poster design in German-speaking countries. More than 600 graphic designers applied for this year, including 183 graphics students. The by a five-member international Jury selected 100 best Works have now been presented in Berlin’s cultural form of the Public. You are there until 2. To see July, until the exhibition moves to eat, and at six further locations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The Berlin poster designers Stefan Guzy is the first Time in the Jury box and speaks in a DW Interview about the competition and the winning posters.

Question: How does the jury work to select the 100 best posters in German-speaking countries?

Stefan Guzy: This is a two-step process. First, there is an Online pre-selection of the more than 1600 submissions the number of submissions will be filtered by which ever. The rest of the more than 800 posters has respected the Jury itself.

What are the Trends in this year:

This year, there is now no specific Trend. But we observe that the quality has become in the last years, much better. And you can see a lot of Experiment, and very much the color. It is not very graphically everything, so photo posters are very present.

You mentioned the quality. What is your criteria for this?

The most important criterion is that the poster needs to stand out. It must be a “stayers”, when he is placarded in the public space. However, we have to do it in the selection of the 100 best posters, especially with culture posters. We have little posters from advertising. You can’t discuss whether the posters are good. But it is also clear that The Jury can only evaluate the posters that were submitted. I’ve seen beautiful advertising posters outside on the street. They are not, unfortunately, because they were available, because they were not filed.

In the digital age, will always be advertised more on the net and via Social Media platforms. Are posters advised, in the meantime, a little out of fashion? What is the significance of you actually have?

Award winning poster from the Studios of Michael Sattler/Tom Kröl.

I would not call that posters are old-fashioned or anachronistic. It is still a special art to tell a story on a poster. And many students irritating the strong. But it’s true: in the posters, it is hard to be visible, also because of the cost at the time of publication. More and more often you find the way, therefore, through digital channels.

Let’s on a poster talk to you and the Jury noticed.

In the case of this poster, there have been discussions in the Jury. On a black background, the three Numbers 1, 2, and 3 are recorded. The question was asked: Is it not a good poster, if I hear the same, what’s the issue? It looks quite delicate in the Background of the event. This will then produce a curiosity for what’s happening. I have not noticed anything immediately. If the poster is so good that it catches me and I stop, then it has fulfilled its task. This poster represents a development which is strengthened in the poster design.
