KPN, TNO and the Agentschap Telecom will probably have to experiment in Groningen with a technology that the ‘pre-5g’. That confirms the provider opposite Tweakers. It comes to a fast mobile connection for wired internet access in outlying areas. The test comes in addition to the existing test in the Groningen Loppersum.

KPN confirms opposite Tweakers that the test is coming, but what that ‘pre-5g’technology, means, there, wants, KPN spokesman Maurice Piek nothing to say about it. It is in any case no current 4g variant, but what technology the provider will apply remains unknown.

The provider, the technology can not 5g, because the telecomautoriteit ITU no technology as 5g standard has established. The test takes in the near future place in Groningen. RTV Noord and NieuweMobiel brought rumors about the trial, but KPN has now for the first time confirmed.

How quickly the technology is that KPN with ‘pre-5g’ indicates, is unknown. The test focuses in each case on high-speed mobile internet as a replacement for wired internet. “Fast internet is important for outdoor areas in Groningen, because the speed of connections now leaves something to be desired,” says chairman Sieger Dijkstra of Economic Board and Groningen, which has the goal of companies to the area of Groningen to attract. The organization was founded after Groningen had to deal with earthquakes as a result of the gas wells. The test would be an area cover that is larger than a single village, but smaller than the whole province.

The test is a cooperation of KPN with TNO and, reportedly, the ministry of Economic Affairs. How long the test will take, is still unknown. The provider already has a 4g trial in Loppersum, which recently expanded: now more people have 4g as a replacement for wired internet in the Groningen village.

Update, 14:28: KPN stressed in response that the provider does not has taken the initiative for the trial. “We are contacted, but we have not taken the initiative,” said spokesman Maurice Piek.
