Lockheed Martin states a breakthrough to have achieved nuclear fusion. The company expects that with its technology in about ten years should be able to kernfusiereactoren to build that are meant for energy production.

That reports Reuters news agency. The research department of Lockheed Martin has four years of project work, as was the head of research Tom McGuire know. To actually to commercial production are going to need partners, both academic and industrial. About ten years Lockheed Martin nuclear fusion reactors actually a commercial building, if the plans go ahead.

It is remarkable that Lockheed Martin focuses on the construction of relatively small reactors. This should be so compact that they by a truck and can be transported. Due to the relatively small size, the fusion reactor can also be used, for example, ships. Lockheed Martin states already have demonstrated that it is a 100MW reactor can be build with dimensions of slightly more than 2 to 3 meters in length and width. Within a year the construction of such a reactor, and about five years a prototype is available.

It uses deuterium and tritium, both isotopes of hydrogen, as fuel for the fusion reactor. Normally, nuclear fusion is difficult because the temperature necessary for two nuclei together to melt is too high for a practical application. Lockheed Martin Aviation Week a glimpse into how the reactor works.

Last week presented scientists the results of experiments which seem to confirm that cold fusion is possible with the so-called E-Cat reactor. However, there are doubts about the research, partly because it is not clear how this reactor works exactly.
