Company is going to do-it-yourself-laptop based on Raspberry Pi release

An American company is well on the way to a kit to be able to release that includes all the parts to make a laptop to be able to build. The Pi-Top is based on the Raspberry Pi and users can create new enclosures 3d printing.

Pi-Top is an Indiegogo-fundraising campaign launched to raise enough money to get to start with the production and delivery. The Pi-Top is a combination of a 13.3″screen with a resolution of 1366×768 pixels, a battery, keyboard, trackpad, wi-fi-adapter, breadboard and power supply. In addition, there are pcb’s for power management, hdmi to lvds bridge for the schermaansturing and a controller for the keyboard and trackpadaandrijving. The basis is the Raspberri Pi B+ and the battery time to go prediction is according to the creators 6 to 8 hours.

The company behind the diy-laptop provides a plastic housing, but also the stl-files for 3d-printers, so that the purchasers of new parts for the housing can print. In the case there is space for the use of so-called ‘HAT’. These are add-on boards on the Raspberry Pi B+ can be mounted for additional functionality. The Pi-Top can be delivered with HAT’s for lcd connectivity, robot functionality and home-automation capabilities.

The makers have the kit developed with the aim to get users in touch with the self build of hardware and a comprehensive instruction manual with information about electricity, sensors, and printed circuit boards. The first Pi-Tops must be in the may 2015 be shipped to the batch of the first supporters of the project. They pay 249 dollars, converted to 195 euro. Bundles without the Raspberry Pi B+ costs 209 dollars or 164 euro, and new HAT’s cost 75 dollars which converted 59 euro.
