A beveiligingsonderzoeker claims that systems for satellite communications in airplanes can be hacked via inflight entertainment systems and wi-fi on board. The creators of the systems themselves challenge the findings.

Beveiligingsonderzoeker Ruben Santamarta of IOActive set this to Reuters. One of the vulnerabilities is that in one system the passwords are hard-coded in the firmware are stored, and thus can’t be changed. Santamarta does its findings later this week at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas from the cloths.

In theory would an attacker on which way the satellietverkeer can manipulate, which also may have consequences for the navigation and safety systems on board. The company, Cobham, whose Aviation 700-communication system vulnerable, perspective the findings of Santamarta; although the system is indeed vulnerable, there would be physical access to the device is necessary for the vulnerabilities to abuse. According to Cobham is to turn off the satellite connection is the worst thing that can happen.

The developer would be to his conclusions are arrived at by the reverse-engineering of communication systems from multiple manufacturers. He notes that his research has not, in practice, has been tested, and that it can be difficult to get his research on to do in the real world. Nevertheless, he argues that the vulnerabilities are a potential danger and that he is with his presentation the manufacturers to action will encourage.

Last year was the Spanish researcher and pilot Hugo Teso even though vulnerabilities in communication systems in aircraft. Using an outdated communication system no support for security or authentication, would it be possible to, for example, the autopilot or manipulate the device to crash.
