Vodafone has begun with the placement of mini-cell towers in the centres of large cities. The first of these ‘small cells’ in the centre of Amsterdam, later this year in Rotterdam. The mini-cell towers will provide more capacity and speed on busy places.

The small cell towers, often fixed to lamp posts or walls, sending a 4g signal on the 2600MHz band, which is almost all 4g phones support. The small cells have a range of tens to hundreds of meters, says Vodafone. They are therefore suitable capacity to place on spots where many people in a small space together. Vodafone had the use of small cells last year, already announced. KPN will also make use of this mini-cell towers in city centres.

The mini-cell towers are already in the centre of Amsterdam and come in the coming months in the centre of Rotterdam. Utrecht and The Hague will follow later. The small cell towers are part of the 4g network that Vodafone used on the 800 and 1800MHz frequencies. Vodafone hopes that in september the network ‘nationwide’. In addition, start Vodafone soon with 4g+.
