Scientists have developed a method for touchscreens significantly firmer, so that there is less chance of cracking, if a user, for example his smartphone. It uses flexible electronics.

The method was developed by researchers from the university of Akron. According to the creators, they have found a way to a layer of flexible and transparent electronics on a polymer layer is placed. The elektronicalaag is formed by a network of kopernanodraden. This claim of the scientists that the two layers are combined is just as transparent as with a conventional touch screen, which is made on the basis of indium-tinoxide. Displays from the university of Akron are, however, stronger because of their flexibility and can better conduct electricity.

By touch screens with the new, flexible layer of electronics can be displays of mobile phones a lot firmer. That should ensure that a screen no longer breaks if, for example, a smartphonegebruiker his device to drop. The scientists think that their method for robust touch screens can compete with existing, conventional touch screens, because the production in theory is cheaper.

The scientists have their findings published in the journal Nano of the American Chemical Society. Now, it is unclear when the flexible, sturdy screens, produced commercially are going to be and what manufacturers are interested in.
