Canonical unveils portable Ubuntu cluster with ten Intel RACK-mini-pc

Canonical and Calm PC the Ubuntu Orange Box was announced. The box contains a cluster of ten Intel RACK-mini-pc’s for a total of 40 cores, 160GB of ram and 1.2 TB storage. The systems are connected internally via a gigabitnetwerk.

The ten RACK’s in the Orange Box are the D53427RKE-systems of Intel with fuel-efficient i5-3427U processors based on Ivy Bridge with the HD Graphics 4000 as gpu. Each system has 16GB of ddr3, as well as an ssd of 120GB. The mutual gigabitverbindingen be provided by a D-Link DGS-1100-16-switch with support for 802.1x q vlan. Canonical and Calm PC provide in addition the necessary configuration options.

The first node contains additional Centrino Advanced-N 6235 card for wireless networking and a hard drive of 2TB. On the back are three usb ports, hdmi, and six gigabit ethernet ports accessible. The Ubuntu Orange Box is the result of a desire to Mark Shuttleworth, the driving force behind Ubuntu, that Calm PC in november 2013 asked for a portable, sturdy micro-cluster for demonstrating and experimenting with cloud services to build. The Box is running Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS, MAAS and Juju. The starting price is 7575 lbs, converted to 9300 euro.
