Microsoft has a test version of its remote desktop app released for Windows Phone. The app only works on Windows Phone 8.1, because it is a so-called “universal app” that works on both Windows and Windows Phone.

Because universal apps only work on Windows Phone 8.1, there is little chance that the Remote Desktop Preview app will ever work on Windows Phone 8. Version 8.1 of Windows Phone is only available as a Developer Preview and will as update for current devices next summer come true.

With the app, users can remotely a Windows pc to access and manage via a secure connection. The app also supports the gestures of Windows, such as the veegbeweginng from the side to make the Charms bar appear.

Microsoft released the Remote Desktop app earlier for iOS and Android. Half a year ago, Microsoft already know that a Windows Phone version in the pipeline was. Users have a compatible pc with the correct Windows version in order to connect. Only the Enterprise and Pro versions of Windows 8 offer Remote Desktop as a host. Under Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate have that option also.
