India has drawn up plans for a huge zonnepark to build. With a capacity of 4GW would be the park’s largest solar power plant in the world. Critics convert, however the necessary question marks in the megaproject.

The zonnepark should be built in the north of India, the Sambhar-a salt lake. On an area of 77 square kilometers would solar panels need to be placed. The park should have a capacity of 4GW. This would make it more than ten times as large as the largest photo voltaics which are currently operational.

The construction of the zonnepark would be seven years, reports Nature. The costs are estimated at more than 3 billion euros and the financing will be provided by six state-owned enterprises. The Indian government expects that as the park once in operation, there is an annual 4 million tons less of CO2 emitted.

The construction of the giant zonnepark falls within the ambitions of the Indian government, in 2020 at least 20GW of solar energy to be able to generate. Critics convert some questioned the scale of the zonnepark; not only would the Indian electricity grid with a loss of 20 percent very inefficient, also, the government would more emphasis should be put on local projects. Thus, less than half of the villages in India direct access to the national grid.
