An Ubuntu developer has in the run-up to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS proposed for the Pipelight project to support. This makes it possible to have the Silverlight plug-in to use in browsers, so for example Netflix is to use with Linux.

The remarkable proposal comes from Ubuntu developer Jo-mode erlend Schinstad on an Ubuntu mailing list. Schinstad think that the inclusion of Pipelight, where Silverlight content can run in a npapi-compatible browser, in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS as a ‘killer feature’ can be seen. Currently Pipelight manually installed.

The Pipelight project relies on a custom version of the Windows emulator Wine and the underlying Silverlight plug-in from Microsoft. This allows Silverlight 5.1 content to be opened in a browser npapi-compatible, such as Firefox. A Linux user can, for example, Netflix content watch. Netflix uses Silverlight as drm platform for its video content.

The chance that Pipelight is actually in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will occur is not very large. So are the necessary adjustments to Wine is not yet included in the Wine 1.7 releases, which Ubuntu is a non-official version is expected to deliver. Also works Pipelight not in browsers that are obsolete npapi understand phasing out, such as Chromium, and Google Chrome. Continue to advocate a lot of open-source developers to ignore proprietary plug-ins like Flash and Silverlight, while Microsoft is more and more open alternatives like html5 advocates.
