BitTorrent is an early test to keep a chat service that not listening would have been and would use technology that is similar to that of the BitTorrent Sync service of the company. Details about the operation of the BitTorrent-Chat-service are, however, scarce.

BitTorrent has started accepting registrations for the alfatest of BitTorrent Chat. The company describes the service as ‘private instant messaging via secure, distributed technology, where no cloud is necessary. Details on the operation gives the company further, but at CNet says a spokesperson that the technology is similar to BitTorrent Sync opslagdient, but optimized for real-time communications.

There would, in any case, no use of central servers, making the communication according to the BitTorrent protected against data breaches and espionage. Also, is the connection encrypted over networks. BitTorrent says it is not aware of any requests from the NSA for access to the communication.

In order to make use of the instant messaging service is, as yet, a BitTorrent account is necessary. Is unknown or the ultimate service support for the sip protocol and therefore interoperability with other im services, and nor is it clear on which platform the alfatest running. Would, in any case, mobile apps lie ahead. Going to an experimental Labs service BitTorrent; when a public release will be released is not known.
