Blackberry and the Bluetooth Special Interest Group today announced that Blackberry 10 provides support for the bluetooth smart protocol. This follows Blackberry Android and iOS that the protocol already support or will do so soon.

Bluetooth smart, also known as bluetooth low energy, makes it possible to connect to other bluetooth smart devices such as sensors on a bicycle, smartwatch or heart rate monitors. The protocol has a lower power consumption than previous bluetooth protocols.

According to Alec Saunders of BlackBerry open this interconnectivity ‘a new world for app developers’. Apps are developed with the tools in the BlackBerry 10 NDK and in addition has Blackberry a number of comprehensive video tutorials posted online with possible applications for bluetooth smart.

Apple does not support the protocol since the iPhone 4S in iOS and Google gave two months ago that Android’s in an upcoming version will also support, presumably that will be version 4.3.
