Sony unveils SmartWatch 2

Sony has a new version of its SmartWatch released. The SmartWatch 2, which serves as a accomplice of Android phones, has a slightly larger screen than its predecessor, is waterproof, and features support for the wireless nfc technology.

Sony introduced its SmartWatch 2 at the same time as the Xperia Z Ultra. The functionality remained the same as that of the first Smart Watch. The accessory is a notification device and remote control for Android phones and can be used for control of music, reading mail, and taking photos. The SmartWatch runs itself also on Android, and the functionality can be done via apps.

Where the original SmartWatch a 1.3″screen with a resolution of 128×128 pixels, has the successor over a 1.6″screen with a resolution of 220×176 pixels. The panel is not oled: Sony opt for lcd. The thickness is 9mm slightly increased and also the weight is higher: the SmartWatch weighs in at 23,5 grams, while the first smart watch still 15,5 grams weighed. Including the standard wristband is the weight increased from 41.5 grams to 48,4 grams. There is also a strap of stainless steel and thus the weight even on 122,5 grams. According to Sony, the accessory is compatible with any 24mm wristband.

The SmartWatch 2 is splash-proof. The device supports bluetooth 3.0 and nfc for one touch pairing in combination with a smartphone with nfc support. Charging is via micro-usb, and with a full battery keeps the SmartWatch 2 in ‘normal use’ 3 to 4 days. The accessory comes in september worldwide, including the Netherlands, for a suggested retail price of 159 euro.
