It seems that an FBI plan for more stringent aftapwetgeving is entered. According to sources, a Us newspaper is a big chance that president Barack Obama is behind the plans to implement. Although the American legislation goes, there are also consequences for the Dutch.

The American newspaper The New York Times writes based on unnamed sources that Us president Obama is behind the plan a success. Incidentally, the FBI has plans to do so should soften it. Still, the legislation, however, result in companies like Skype, WhatsApp or Facebook may be compelled to be a digital backdoor in to build, which the intelligence traffic can be draining.

Originally wanted the FBI all internet companies to impose a backdoor in to build for the intelligence services, similar to the back door, which the carriers already have. That backdoor can be used to eavesdrop on conversations. The plan was met, however, strong resistance from the technology industry, who feared that a too large burden for smaller startups would be: which would then with the few resources they had to invest in the tap equipment.

In the amended plan it is waived, all companies are obliged to cooperate in tapverzoeken. Don’t they do that, then they should get a fine of at least $ 25,000 per day pay. Companies, however, need only to invest in tapvoorzieningen if they have to be dedicated. That means, according to the FBI that most of the smaller companies that in practice will not have to do so.

The consequences for internet users, however, remain equally far-reaching: the intelligence services will be a lot easier to be able to data of internet users. This is not only for data of Americans, but data of all users, including users who are, for example, in the Netherlands or Belgium.

In addition, there is a requirement for foreign entities operating in the United States. That are required to have a U.s. contact that is accessible for tapverzoeken. Moreover, working online companies is in practice often already in inzageverzoeken in countries other than that in which they themselves are located. The plans can count on strong criticism not only of privacyactivisten, but also of politicians who fear that companies prefer to go elsewhere will go down.

Recently, a former employee of the FBI, the American government all phone calls recording. This is likely only to communication involving at least one of the two interlocutors in the United States. The FBI has the claims of the former employee is not confirmed.
