Just before Microsoft in Paris a demonstration is going to give of IllumiRoom, the company has a video released in which it shows that the technique is intended for a new generation of consoles. This refers to the manufacturer is probably the successor of the Xbox 360.

Microsoft will later this week at CHI 2013 in Paris, pay attention to IllumiRoom, a technique used earlier this year during the CES unveiled. In the run-up to the presentation in Paris, Microsoft has already two videos released of the technique. In a 30 second video summary, Microsoft claims that the technique is intended for a game console of the next generation, without specify which console it is for eyes. In all likelihood mean the consolebouwer however, the successor of his own Xbox 360. It is expected that Microsoft’s successor on 21 may will announce.

In a longer version of the clip, and let Microsoft see what the technique has in mind. With IllumiRoom links Microsoft a projector to an Xbox. Also Kinect plays a role in the whole. The projector is aimed at the wall behind the tv which the game is displayed. Via the IllumiRoom software, the projector displays images that are related to the played game. The projector can be a bigger part of the gaming environment to display on the tv is visible. That can be done in different ways; very realistic, but possibly also out of focus, so that the less distracting from what is displayed on the tv.

Illumiroom can, however, also other images. Falling snowflakes, for example. The combination with Kinect makes it even possible that the snowflakes seem to continue to be placed on objects in the room as a cabinet. IllumiRoom can also be used for the display of abstract images, such as lighting effects, or a grid that fits on and moves along with the movements in the game.

The demonstration by Microsoft during CHI 2013 should, according to the creators still be seen as a ‘proof of concept’. It is not clear whether Microsoft IllumiRoom also really on the market.
