‘For the first time, more mobile chat over sms-traffic’

Last year, for the first time, more messages via chat services like WhatsApp sent than sms messages were sent, according to research by marktvorser Informa. Lost providers billions in revenue.

Last year, 19 billion messages through chat apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger is sent, while usd 17.6 billion sms messages were sent, so post the BBC on the basis of the Informa-figures. It would be the first time that there is less gesms’t then that messages from such applications are sent.

The popularity of im services, at the expense of the turnover of providers: research firm Ovum estimates that they have $ 23 billion of sms revenue backfired, or 15.6 billion euros. For many providers, also in the Netherlands, was sms-traffic for many years a dairy cow: the processing of the messages takes almost nothing, while for a text message, usually around ten cents is charged.

Informa expects that the volume of sms traffic continues to grow: next year are estimated to be of the marktvorser 50 billion instant messages per day sent against 21 billion sms messages. Incidentally, falling to the predictions of Informa question: last year, predicted the agency that sms traffic up to 2016 would be greater than traffic through chat services.

The agency believes that sms traffic in the short term will not disappear. Especially in emerging economies, many people have no smartphone, so they do not have access to services such as WhatsApp. For those groups of people, sms is still the designated service to send text messages.
