A British company has developed a method for leds directly on siliciumwafers to produce. To say that the company is the first that has managed gallium nitride leds on wafers to produce.

The leds of the British company Plessey Semiconductor can produce, are still not the high-end leds in lamps used to be. The small led’s should be on term, however, can be useful for led bulbs, but for the moment they have a light output of just 2 lumens. This would mean that they are especially suited for indication lights, or if achtergrondverlichtingsbron. The leds would, however, be quite easy can be made and are cheaper than comparable products, on silicon carbide or saffierwafers be made. That wafers require a galliumnitridelaagje of eight to nine microns, while the siliciumwafers a layer of 2.5 μm is required.

The British produce their leds in addition to 6″wafers, while the other methods of 2″ or 4″wafers use. That gives you more leds per wafer, which, according to Plessey fifty to eighty percent lower cost savings. The production, still can be scaled to 8″wafers, which is a further cost reduction would mean. In the factories of the company currently monthly about 500 wafers, good for seven million leds, to be produced. With more production lines and larger wafers would be easy in the future tenfold.

The technique for gallium nitride on siliciumwafers to bring to the Cambridge university developed. The crystal structure of the two semiconductors is different, making it difficult the materials together. The Cambridge spin-off that the new wafers commercialization, was launched in march 2012, Plessey acquired. In the course of 2013 should the light outputs of the leds can be increased from the current 2 to about 150 lumens. The company wants cheap, bright leds provide for the lighting of houses, cars, buildings, and roads.
