A coalition of European privacyorganisaties, including the Netherlands Bits of Freedom, is worried that proposed, strict European privacy laws to be watered. According to them, there are several proposals on the table for less stringent rules.

On the proposed European directive itself, the organisations to speak: who will take care of them for better protection of privacy. However, the amendments or proposed modifications, the privacyorganisaties fear.

The organisations analysed the three thousand of these proposals and propose that the several amendments of the privacy of EU citizens considerably will limit. That they write in a report that is presented today. In addition to Bits of Freedom, the scissors also include Privacy International and the French La Quadrature du Net is behind the report.

The authors of the report to challenge proposals to the definition of the permission that users must provide for the sharing of their personal data, to weaken. In the original proposal of the privacy directive is still spoken about ‘explicit consent’, but in some of the amendments is that the language toned down. Also suggest to citizens to present themselves without consent and for personal data for additional purposes to be able to use, to add to the dissatisfaction.

The controversial proposals are to be especially supported by Meps from the liberal group ALDE, which include D66 and the VVD are part. Also many parliamentarians from the Christian-democrat group, the EPP, to support the proposals. The CDA is a part of that. The organisations call upon the european parliament to ensure strict privacy rules. On 29 may agree to the european parliament on the motions.
