European commissioner Neelie Kroes has announced Tuesday a research grant of 50 million to the fund for the development of 5g technology to stimulate. The aim of Hearth is to by 2020, a 5g network is ready for use.

Kroes hopes that the grant, that is distributed over several European research projects, will contribute to a leading role for Europe in the development of 5g technology. Kroes said that Europe first needs to go walk in the field of mobile technology, both in the development of wireless network technology as in the production of mobile devices. Previously warned them that Europe is behind with the roll-out of 4g networks.

There is, as yet, little is known about how the 5g standard should go see it: no standaardiseringsorganisatie in the field of telecom has officially been slightly over determined. However, scientists are busy developing technology for use in future mobile networks. Also announced the British government in October last year to 11.6 million pounds went to invest in the development of a 5g standard.

The Dutch Commissioner reported at the same time that the European Commission between 2007 and 2013, around 700 million euro available for the development of network technology. Half of that money went to research for wireless network technology, including the development of 4g.
