Facebook claims to be target of ‘sophisticated attack’

Facebook says its systems to previous month target of a ‘sophisticated attack’. The attackers knew the computers of employees to infect via a zero day exploit in Java. There is no evidence that user data in the case, was in the attack.

The attack happened after a, according to Facebook, ‘handful’ of employees of an unnamed mobile site for developers visited. The website served an exploit that the Java sandbox excluded and made sure that the laptops got infected with malware. The security team of Facebook discovered a suspicious domain in its dns logs of the company and knew this to be a laptop of an employee. Oracle has the zero day exploit in Java on 1 February this year patched.

Facebook says that others also a target of the attack, without naming names, but the social network would be one of the first that the method discovered. The site says to look to the origin of the attack, but it is reported here, no further details. Also, it is not known what purpose the attack and or Facebook, for example, a target was a target. The past few months, there are a lot of high-profile attacks on networks of U.s. newspapers have been coming laity from China, but there are no indications that, in this case to a similar case.

Facebook guarantees in any case that there is no user data were stolen and that the investigation into the attack continues.
