Toshiba has announced a new image sensor for compact cameras has been developed. The chip makes use of backside-illuminated pixels for a high light output. Toshiba knew twenty million pixels, the 1/2,3″sensor.

The pixels are a lot smaller than that in Toshiba’s 16-megapixel sensor, where they of 1.34 µm in size. For the new 20mp sensor, the pixels are decreased to 1.2 µm. According to Toshiba, the image sensor with the smallest pixels and, moreover, most of the pixels on that sensor size. Thanks to a new production method and pixelontwerp says Toshiba that the sensor despite the smaller dimensions of the pixels still have a 15 percent higher elektronenverzadiging, an indication of the light sensitivity.

The

sensor is 1/2,3″size designed mainly for compact cameras, and would, in addition to shooting pictures, can be used to capture video. In full hd mode to 60 frames per second can be included; in 720p mode would be that with 100fps should be possible. At the full 20mp resolution, the frame rate 30fps. From the summer of 2013 will be the mass production of the new sensor to start: Toshiba says than 300,000 pieces per month to be able to deliver.
