“Windows 8 will next year update under the code name Blue’

Microsoft would plan to use in 2013 an update for Windows 8. Developers would, under code name Blue is already working on the point release. With an interim update get Microsoft off of its traditional releasecyclus.

It reports the usually well informed Microsoft watcher Mary Jo Foley on the basis of anonymous sources. Instead of starting on a multi-year development of Windows 9 now Windows 8 rtm status, Microsoft would now choose to also create an interim release for the 26 October general Windows 8.

The project would, within Microsoft known under the code name ‘Blue’. The so-called point release would be in the summer of next year to come out. What new functionality in this point release is going to contain, or that it’s going to be a traditional service pack, with just a bundling of interim released hotfixes and updates, is not clear.

Microsoft, however, would want to steps of traditional releasecyclus in which the software giant every two to three years a new OS is released. Microsoft would consider to be, just like Apple with OS X, with a greater frequency of relatively small updates to its operating system.
