Mobile carriers are working on an own standard for push notifications on smartphones. The Push Notification Service requires the use of data reduction, the smartphone-battery saving and the developers can easily create is a push to build.

The push-server could serve as a replacement for the notification-servers of Google, Apple and Microsoft, according to a non-public document of the GSM Association, an umbrella organisation of providers. Tweakers.net features this document in which the plan for the Push Notification Service providers out of the canvases is done.

Current push-functionality are mobile phone providers, a thorn in the eye, because a lot of different apps on your own are allowed to connect. Especially on Android it happens a lot. So did T-Mobile a few years ago, a trial with Network Controlled Fast Dormancy to the traffic of apps to restrict.

According to the umbrella organisation of providers brings with it the offer of a private push service a lot of advantages. Developers would push easier installation, because they do not need to take into account the platform. Providers would benefit from the service, because especially on Android now use the push services of various apps a lot of unnecessary data traffic caused. Users would spend longer on a battery charge due to the centralized notifications.

The notifications for the new Push Notification Service of the server of the developer, and then directly be sent to users or to the servers, for example Apple, which has its own push service mandatory for iOS users.

There are, however, also disadvantages to the concept: Windows Phone and iOS users are already communicating with a central push server, respectively, of Microsoft and Apple so there is no advantage to be gained. Additionally, a central server will go offline, so there is no push notifications and more can be controlled.

Providers would join a server for notifications can share the costs. There is still no roadmap known of when the Push Notification Service of the providers online would have to go: the document, which is dated July of this year, describes a plan without concrete data. Also, it is not known which of the providers participating.
