Canon unveils new PowerShots with large zoom range

Canon has two new digital cameras in its PowerShot line, announced that both about a 16-megapixelsensor and a large zoom range. The SX500 IS has a 30x-zoom lens, while the SX160 IS 16x zoom.

A part of the specifications leaked, along with photos last week, but now Canon has given the camera’s officially announced. The cameras both use a 1/2,3″-cdd with 16 megapixels which the data by a Digic 4 chip is processed. This imager is by Canon in many other cameras, including the EOS 600D, and 60D dlsr’s. The cameras can handle sd, sdhc and sdxc cards and have lenses with optical image stabilization.

Of the two, the SX500 IS the top model. This has a zoom range of 24 to 720mm in kleinbeeldtermen with an aperture range of f/3,4-5,8 and supports iso values from 80 to 1600. The 3″lcd on the back has a total of 461.000 sub-pixel, and the unit features a flip-up flash. The SX500 IS can video to 720/25p recording. The camera is powered by NB-6L battery which is good and should be good for 195 shots.

The SX160 IS can with an effective zoom range of 28-448mm slightly less zoom in far and the maximum iso value is with iso 800 also lower. The aperture range is f/3.5-5,9. Also in this model, the flash is folded, but it extends less far than the SX500 IS. The 3″lcd has about 230,000 subpixels and the fact that the camera runs on two AA batteries, which according to the manufacturer, approximately 380 pictures. In addition to photos, the aircraft can also make videos; the maximum resolution is 1280×720 pixels with a maximum frame rate of 30fps.

The PowerShot SX500 IS from the end of August available with a suggested retail price of 309 euros, while the PowerShot SX160 IS only at the end of september in the shops. Canon for a suggested retail price of 179 euros.
