Intel has a 10GBase-T network controller announced with a relatively low list price of 124 dollars. The Ethernet Controller X540 his work was economical to do, and on motherboards or network cards ge lwa integrated.
Intel announced at the same time, a new pci-e card that uses the controller: Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X540-T2. This card has no suggested retail price given. Intel promises that the card is backwards compatible and can be deployed in data centers, which then at a later time, possibly able to switch to 10GbE switches.
The controller makes use of Intel DDIO technology, that the components allows to directly with the processorcache to work. The technology only works in conjunction with the Intel Xeon E5-line serverchips. Intel says enables better performance in terms of bandwidth and efficiency to be able to deliver, because no more back-and-forth need to be communicated with the system memory.
