IDC: Apple and Amazon dominate the tablet market

Tablets with Android and iOS controlling 97 percent of the market, with Amazon by far the largest supplier of Android tablets. The entire tablet market grew in 2011, with 64,3 percent to a total of 68,7 million.

Of 68,7 million tablets that were shipped in 2011, 40.5 million iPads of Apple. About 26.4 million of the tablets were running Android, and they also provided Research in Motion 1.8 million Playbooks, reports research firm IDC.

Especially the fourth quarter was a successful period for the tablet market: there were 28.2 million systems shipped. The Android tablet from Amazon in the fourth quarter was released, the Kindle Fire, was in great demand: 4.7 million pieces. This gives Amazon a market share of 6.8 percent. Samsung takes the third position, saw its market share is set to rise from 5.5 percent to 5.8 percent. Amazon showed with its introduction the market share of Android increased from 32.3 percent in the third to eur 44.6 percent in the fourth quarter.

That was at the expense of especially iOS, that for 6.9 percentage points of lost and the fourth quarter ended with a market share of 54.7 percent. Also Blackberry lost further ground, with 0.4 percentage points to 0.7 percent. The effect of the stop with WebOS by HP was also visible: earlier, the tablet OS have a market share of five percent, but in the last quarter, so that is reduced to zero.

In the fourth quarter were also 10.7 million e-readers shipped, compared to 6.5 million in the previous quarter. The research firm expects that, in 2012, 106,1 million tablets will be sold, and also predicts the market researcher that Android iOS, around 2015, will catch up.
