Nvidia has the Free University in Amsterdam, chosen as the first Cuda Teaching Center. The university offers a curriculum around gpgpu technology with the Cuda platform on the DAS-4 supercomputer of the VU.
With the Teaching Center Program aims to Nvidia that universities with a computer science training lessons to offer in the use of gpgpu technology. In addition, the company can provide study material and werkapparatuur donate if the universities use the Cuda C/C++technology, so that students hands-on experience with the platform.
Rob van Nieuwpoort, who at the university teaches in gpu-computing, the demand for the Teaching Center Program submitted. Now Nvidia, which has been accepted, you will receive the Free University of Amsterdam under other ten GTX 480 video card and two Tesla C2075-variants, which are specially designed for gpu computing. Those cards are in the DAS-4 supercomputer of the VU installed. That cluster is at the disposal of researchers to be very compute-intensive tasks.
In the box, Parallel computing, under the master’s degree in computer science from the VU falls, students learn applications that make use of parallel computing. Cuda makes use of the large number of search indexes which graphic cards are in. One of the assignments that the students in the new curriculum will, for example, to use Cuda via the commandline an image on the DAS-4 cluster editing. The cluster can also OpenCL, the open alternative standard, be used.
Also will the Lofar project, which is trying to the universe using radio waves to map, maybe make use of the gpgpu technology, the DAS-4 cluster to the received data to process.
