UvA students can after delay switch to Google Apps

From march provides Google the e-mail of students of the University of Amsterdam, where the used mail for almost all students remains the same. Unforeseen problems have the project half a year delayed.

The plans to switch layers back in June ready. The intention was to have it in september to roll out, but it failed because some services are still older systems used, such as identification via the student number, in place of the name of the student. It has six months took longer than expected to get all the old services to make them compatible with Google.

Students of the university of amsterdam between 6 and 19 march, an invitation to sign up for the UvA-studentenmail through the Google Apps for Education project. Students will get 25GB of storage for their mail and documents in Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Calendar. The switch is optional; students can also choose to have all mail sent to their personal e-mail address that they have on their registration.

Reason for the switch is the need to cut back. “By the application to outsource we save a lot of money, because we have our own mail servers have to manage,” said Laura Erdtsieck of the UvA. How much exactly is saved is not known. The new system would also better meet the demands and wishes of the students.
