Torvalds: requirement for root password when harmless actions ‘idiot’

Linus Torvalds has vehemently taken to the in his eyes, overly strict security in OpenSUSE. The Linux-guru is furious that for harmless actions, such as changing the time zone, getting to a root password is asked.

Torvalds, who is known for his outbursts of anger, reported in a posting on Google+ that he some time OpenSUSE on his Macbook Air had installed because this Linux distribution on the Apple laptop would run. Soon he began to get annoyed about the fact that, for the change of the time zone, or log onto a new wifi network every time it was asked for the root password. In Torvalds’ eyes is such a strict beveiligingsregime ‘idiot’ and ‘wrong’.

His annoyance was increased when it turned out that Torvalds’ daughter was not able to be at school, add a printer, because OpenSUSE continued to ask for a root password. Torvalds states that only ‘mentally disturbed’ choose to for such a simple and harmless actions the root password to continue questions.

In his talk, Torvalds indirectly that such a design scope in the security of a Linux OS for an average user is only going to deter, and ultimately the security of the OS. In addition, it reports to the Linux-foreman that he OpenSUSE in the ban has done to look to a different distribution for its Macbook Air.
