Telenet has, after a favourable evaluation of the pilot project in Ghent, decided to take over the whole of Flanders and Brussels, so-called homespots to roll out. The first roll-out begins on 20 march; then the project per province is further expanded.

The Wi-Free-project of the Belgian telco Telenet gives customers the ability to log into a nearby wifi access point of Telenet. The protest is basically a wifi access point, but then activated on the wireless router from a Telenetklant. The service is being rolled out after a successful pilot project in Ghent. Telenet customers send a mail with the question if they have a homespot want to activate, then a separate ssid is created. That happens first in Flanders, then in West-Flanders, Antwerp, Limburg, Brussels and Flemish-Brabant.

According to Telenet will be the providers of the protest no speed difference brands. The surfing speed for the users of the protest will not be high, as Telenet, the project defines as: “Free Wi-fi, also to friends, family, and acquaintances (and not to the speed of internet connection in your home to match).” If the user has more than 2GB per month over a protest, they can be closed or can be charged.

Wi-Free works with the already known system of hot spots. This allows the user to connect to a hotspot if the ssid ‘telenethomespot’, browse in the browser to a random page and is then redirected to the login page. Belgacom, in February all of a half a million FON spots opened up.
