Intel has for the business market are the latest generation of server processors to be released. The Xeon E5-2600-series should be much higher performance combined with lower power consumption and considerably more bandwidth for the network interconnects.
Yet for the processors came out, rose supercomputers that with the new Xeons were configured already on the Top500, the list of fastest supercomputers. That is mainly due to the almost twice as high Linpack score, one of the most important benchmarks for supercomputers, that the E5-2600 series drop. The cpu’s get that score thanks to AVX-support, or Advanced Vector Extensions, which will enable floating point operations be accelerated thanks to a wider data bus.
Intel claims an overall performance improvement compared to the previous generation of Xeons by 80 percent and 50 percent better performance per watt ratio. The improved performance is there to blame, but also improved power management, which not only cores, but also the randcomponenten as geheugencontrollers and i/o logic in low consumption mode will be set when the cpu is idle.
The third major improvement that Intel the E5-2600 series attributes, the i/o speed. The i/o controller within the cpu is removed, causing the latency to the network adapter with the 30 percent would be reduced. Also the use of pci-express 3.0-lanes allows for more bandwidth, and finally, the extra L3 cache make that data less between the cpu and memory need to be exchanged. Security features as McAfees Trusted Execution Technology, and AES-NI, or new instructions for AES, are also available.
The E5-2600 series is available in versions with four, six, or eight cores and up to 20MB of L3 cache available. The quad-core E5-2643 3.3 GHz, the fastest in the series. The most expensive, the E5-2690 eight-core 2.9 GHz, 2057 dollar costs. An entry-level model, the E5-2603 with four cores at 1.8 GHz, it costs 198 dollars. The cpu’s are Sandy Bridge EP cores on board which are on 32nm to be baked. The series is in motherboards with up to two lga2011 sockets plugged, and can be combined with up to 768GB of memory.
