Hands-on: Fujitsu’s first ultrabook with Ivy Bridge

Fujitsu revealed at the Cebit a new model in its Lifebook series, making it the ultrabook market wants to enter. The device will be shipped with Ivy Bridge cpus and the cheapest model should be 699 euro.

The Lifebook by Fujitsu was shown had model number UH572 and what configuration is concerned, is remarkable. So was the notebook powered by a Core i7 cpu at 2.2 GHz, based on Intel’s upcoming Ivy Bridge architecture, in combination with 4GB of memory, but a ssd was missing. It was a simkaartgleuf present. According to an employee was not to a configuration that is also on the market will be charged. The final models will be the cheaper varieties of regular hard disk drives contain and get more expensive configurations available for the ssd’s and the simkaartgleuf.

The model we saw had a white underside, gray schermcover and matt black inside, and was made of plastic. The strip under the screen where the hinges are incorporated in the same color finish as the schermcover. Although it is still an engineering sample, it was felt the device is solid; there were no annoying seams or crevices to explore, and the keyboard exhibited little flexibility while typing. Striking were the keys, which seemed to be small compared with that of many other notebooks. Still, the attack is fine and we did not have the idea that the size of the keys, touch typing is in the way.

Fujitsu has the UH572 is equipped with two usb 3.0 ports on the left side and a 2.0-variation on the right-hand side. Furthermore, we saw an eye for a Kensington lock, a hdmi output, a card reader and the aforementioned simkaartgleuf. The 13,3″screen had a resolution of 1366×768 pixels, and it was matt finished. The horizontal viewing angles seemed to be on first glance fine, but as we have seen before, the vertical viewing angles are less good.

The touchpad on the test model that we saw fell in the negative sense. The size and positioning was nothing wrong and the two physical buttons felt fine. The touchpad itself was, however, little accurate and an attempt to move the cursor was sometimes interpreted as a mouse click. Who is the touchpad, we could not determine; there was no driver software present on the system. Maybe that’s also the explanation for the moderate performance. In any case it is something that in a final version is supposed to work better.

Our first impression with the UH572 is positive, and that was reinforced when a member of staff us told us that the company strives to be the cheapest model, for 699 euros in the market. That is almost 100 euros cheaper than the Acer S3, which is currently the cheapest ultrabook. If Fujitsu that price get, the UH572 on paper quite a bit for your money.
