Elpida asks bankruptcy

Memory Manufacturer Elpida Memory, Inc. has bankruptcy requested by the Japanese government. The company would no longer be able to survive in the competition with other manufacturers and the decline in dram prices.

The geheugenmarkt is under pressure; prices of ddr memory decline for about five years so rapidly that manufacturers see their turnover decrease. Also Elpida, in volume the third party manufacturer of memory, has for years struggled to black figures on the drawing. The Japanese government had to Elpida in 2009 with a geldinjectie assist; the public investment was converted to one and a half billion euro. Elpida was also on the government approval for the bankruptcy, that in Tokyo was requested.

The Japanese company knew all the five quarters, no profits and now has outstanding financial obligations to the value of over four billion euro. Dram prices are at that time, from september 2010 to november 2011, dropped from 4,85 to 0,71 dollars per 2Gb-ddr3 chip. Rivals Samsung and Hynix with market shares of respectively about 45 and 22 percent, could benefit from a geheugenschaarste as a result of Elpida’s bankruptcy.
