In the source code of a not yet released version of Apples iOS operating system are a number of references to two new chips to Apple. It’s probably going to be the tweekernige A5X and quad-core A6.

The references are in the beta version of iOS 5.1 which is currently only available for developers. Therein discovered 9To5Mac, the serial numbers S5L8945X and S5L8950X. Because the Apple A4 and A5, respectively, serial numbers S5L8930X and S5L8940X, the numbers found most likely a reference to new Apple soc’s. The 45X-version seems to be a minor update of the A5, while the 50X number suggests that it is a whole new chip: the A6.

The development of a tweekernige version with model number A5X and the vierkernige A6 seem to be an explanation for this.

Apple announces likely iPad 3 in early march. According to the latest rumors, is a dual-core chip in the tablet, so the A5X is the most likely candidate. Also version of iOS 5.1 on the iPad 3 and the display would have a resolution of 2048×1536 pixels. The A5X soc would be mainly improvements to the gpu, which is probably necessary for the high-resolution display with sufficient speed to be able to send.
