Sony shows at the end of 2011 patent pending on a system that is very similar to the Kinect, the motion-sensing controller of competitor Microsoft. The system makes use of a 3d camera with motion detect.

The United States Patent Office has a request published Sony at the end of 2011 submitted, appears to have. It is a “user-driven three-dimensional interactive gaming environment” is defined. The set-up that Sony describes consists of a 3d-camera on a tv is placed. The camera is connected to a console. The description seems very on that of the Kinect, the controller that Microsoft is on the market in 2010 brought. According to the definition given by Sony at the time of application, the camera used to take the position of the player in the three-dimensional space, to determine the movements of the player to follow. That is exactly how Kinect works.

Sony countered in 2009 the announcement of the Kinect with the Move, a controller which moves a player to follow, but that uses one or two physical controllers, which the player holds it in his hand. Just as the Kinect appeared also the Move on the market in 2010. The patent for the new controller is applied for by Richard Marks, the man who once had the EyeToy camera for Sony developed. That appeared in 2003 for the PlayStation 2 and could be used for movements of players to detect. The EyeToy was, however, not a 3d camera. It is not known whether Sony is planning to really a type of camera on the market.
