Gartner: more than 200 million Android smartphones sold in 2011

There are, in 2011, approximately 220 million smartphones sold, with Google’s Android mobile operating system. That treasure analistenbureau Gartner. That is a tripling compared to 2010. The number of sold iPhones doubled.

Gartner has the numbers per mobile platform not published, but a sum of all estimated sales figures per quarter, the sum again. The number of Android phones sold increased from 67 million in 2010 to 219 million in 2011. The number of iPhones has increased, according to Gartner, from 46 million in 2010 to 89 million last year. In total, in 2011, 475 million smartphones sold, an increase of 47 percent. Meanwhile, 31 percent of the sold phones worldwide is a smartphone.

Approximately 51 percent of the smartphones in the last months of 2011 were sold run on Android, so the figure for Gartner. Apple’s iOS runs on 23.8 percent of the sold smartphones. BlackBerry saw its market share drop from 14.8 percent to 8.8 percent. Also Microsoft got big hits: the market share fell from 3.4 percent to 1.9 percent, despite the launch of Windows Phone 7.5 in October. There were, according to Gartner, 2.75 million Windows Phones sold, and thus the OS is still behind Samsung’s own platform Bada. The Wave phones were three million times over the counter.

It is unclear how reliable the figures from Gartner. For the last quarter, Samsung has, according to Gartner, 34 million smartphones sold, while from an estimate of Tweakers.net a number of between 37 and 45 million came. Gartner estimates the number of sold iPhones at 35.5 million, while Apple itself is the number 37 million in the quarter. Perhaps the difference is explained by the fact that both Apple and Samsung, the number of shipped devices measure, while Gartner expects the number of smartphones that have actually sold.
